<p><strong><em>26/06/2023</em></strong></p>

<p>Stretch Shortening Cycles (SSC) are a key part of the equation when it comes to producing force, speed and ultimately distance in a great sequence. </p>

<p>In the previous article we looked at the first of 3 main cycles, the X- Factor Stretch between the torso and the pelvis. (<a href="https://www.philliptanhamgolf.com/x-factor-stretch/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Click here to watch that video</a>) </p>

<p>In this article we&#8217;re going to look at the second main SSC, when the torso turns into the lead arm and creates a stretch on the lead shoulder.</p>

<p>The amount of stretch is relatively small on paper, powerful players measure on average 2 degrees of stretch, but the contribution it makes to an efficient kinematic sequence can&#8217;t be overlooked.</p>

<p>For a simple drill to feel what this sequence and stretch is like watch the video below.</p>

<p><strong><em>Oct 2021</em></strong></p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Consistency</h2>

<p>When working with players online or in person, one of the most common requests is, &#8220;<em>I want more consistency.</em>&#8221; In most cases, this means improving strike quality and eliminating heavy or thin shots.</p>

<p>To achieve this, players need to develop the technique and skill to consistently make contact with the ground in the right place (after the ball), every time. While different players may have different technical issues preventing them from being able to do this, the checkpoints in this article are likely key areas to focus on.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Who is this article for?</strong></h3>

<ul>
<li>Players struggling with heavy or thin shots</li>

<li>Players looking for more distance</li>
</ul>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>How do I know this is for me?</strong></h3>

<ul>
<li>You often hit the ground before the ball (fat shots) or miss the ground (thin shots)</li>

<li>Your contact feels inconsistent from swing to swing</li>

<li>You feel like your swinging with lots of effort but with no increase in distance</li>

<li>You want to improve your technique for more reliable ball-striking</li>
</ul>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>What You’ll Learn</strong></h3>

<ul>
<li>Understanding the swing characteristic of an &#8216;early release&#8217;</li>

<li>Step by step checkpoints to work through to improve</li>

<li>Practical drills to refine your ball-striking</li>
</ul>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Position 5</h2>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large is-resized"><img decoding="async" width="940" height="788" src="https://www.philliptanhamgolf.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/P5-Archive.png" alt="" class="wp-image-1225" style="width:589px;height:494px" srcset="https://www.philliptanhamgolf.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/P5-Archive.png 940w, https://www.philliptanhamgolf.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/P5-Archive-300x251.png 300w, https://www.philliptanhamgolf.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/P5-Archive-768x644.png 768w" sizes="(max-width: 940px) 100vw, 940px" /></figure>

<p>The picture above is 3 Professional Golfers at one of the most telling moments in the swing. When the left arm (for a right handed player) reaches parallel to the ground in the downswing. At this stage in the swing all the best ball strikers begin to look very similar. <br> <br>Studying this part of the swing can tell an awful lot about a player’s ability to strike the ball consistently with effortless speed. Achieving this dynamic look halfway into the downswing however is <strong>achieved by doing the right things leading up to it, starting at the set up.</strong> <strong>Its a position that&#8217;s created as a result of of doing things well in the back swing and transition.</strong></p>

<p>Players struggling with thin or heavy strikes may notice on video that, at this stage in the downswing, their club is positioned much farther away from their body.<br></p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Checkpoints</h2>

<p>The following videos cover the main checkpoints to work through in order to begin building towards more consistency.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">What to Look out for when Videoing your Swing</h3>

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/NkBjtYgJHRI" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">The Grip</h3>

<iframe loading="lazy" width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/rrvxcJd5bZ8" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">The Body Pivot is the Engine</h3>

<iframe loading="lazy" width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/qSUt8SK_E04" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-left">Putting it all Together..</h3>

<iframe loading="lazy" width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/glAlZrJSrnQ" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

<p>By working through each of these checkpoints you will be
able to find which piece is missing and holding you back from creating the
consistency of strike you’re looking for with effortless speed. </p>
