How to Reduce Excess Right-to-Left Curve

In an interview after his Masters win, Rory McIlroy spoke about his range session on Saturday night before the final round, where he was working on reducing the right-to-left curve on his ball flight. He explained that his swing path had started to drift too far out to the right, and his focus was on feeling more open through the body to help bring the path back to the left.

When the torso and hips get too closed during the downswing and through impact, the club can approach the ball too far from the inside. This in-to-out path often produces pushes, excessive right-to-left curvature, and inconsistent contact, particularly thin or heavy strikes.

One of the most effective ways to address this is by improving the feel of your pivot, specifically the combination of tilt and rotation through impact. Maintaining your dynamic posture allows the hands and club to exit more to the left through impact. This helps neutralise the swing path, bringing it closer to zero, while also encouraging a more forward low point for more consistent ball striking.

The drill shown in the video is designed to help you develop this feel. It’s a simple way to train the correct pivot motion, giving you a better sense of how the body and club should move through impact if you’re struggling with the ball flight that’s curving too far right to left.

How to Transfer Energy for More Clubhead Speed (Kinematic Sequence Explained)

If you’re struggling to generate clubhead speed, the issue is often not effort but how energy is transferred through the swing. In efficient golf swings, speed is created through a sequence of acceleration and deceleration between body segments. When this sequence is working well, energy moves effectively through the chain and into the club.

In the videos below, we’ll look at how this pattern works and why it’s essential for producing speed. You’ll also see a simple drill designed to improve how energy is transferred into the lead arm and ultimately into the grip.

This drill is also highly effective for players working on maintaining dynamic posture in the downswing, helping to regain forward bend and avoid the club working too far underneath the plane. It can be especially useful for those whose trail leg and hip move excessively towards the ball in transition and downswing.

Using resistance is an extremely effective way to find a feel for a strong impact, and we can use those same principles of resistance to find a feel for the takeaway and back swing sequence.

This drill is excellent if you feel like..

✔️ Your arms get disconnected from your pivot in the takeaway.

✔️ If you struggle with the pelvis swaying away from the target too much in the back swing.

Using resistance in the takeaway encourages the lead shoulder and core to engage, and at the same time create more stability through your trail foot.

It creates a back swing sequence that gives you a sensation of loading your back swing so that the downswing feels athletic and automatic.

Arm structure breaking down post impact is a very common problem many golfers struggle with. It reduces clubhead speed, affects consistency of contact and over time can even lead to elbow pain.

This tendency, however, is almost always a symptom, which is why simply trying to keep the arms straight often does not work. The key is to identify the root cause, some of which, but not all, I cover in this video taken from a recent lesson.

If this is something you’re working on in your swing, hopefully some of the ideas in this video can help.

This video is especially helpful for players early in their development, those learning to balance body motion with efficient hand and arm function to create solid contact, speed and control over the clubface alignment through impact.

Whilst the pivot motion of the body is essential for power to be assembled, loaded and stored in the golf swing, without the arm and wrist motion, the power never gets released efficiently into the golf club.

The ideas and drills here are for a player that over uses the body pivot and under uses the arms and wrists. (If you’re a player who doesn’t use the body enough and is too active the the wrists and forearms- look away now! or check out these articles instead.. Backswing Pivot Benchmark / 6 Rotation Drills / Tour Body Pivot Checkpoints / Building the Pivot )

💡 Some of the keys are..

A grip adjustment to enable the lead wrist to load and release energy

Deliver the club in a way that helps the club head travel down through impact (whilst the hands travel up!) with enough speed.

A drill to learn how to square the club face up independently of the body pivot

If you feel like your swing takes a lot of effort, but you’re not seeing that effort translate into distance, you’ll find some key concepts in here to help you convert that effort into solid contact, club head speed and club face control.

28/08/2025

This video is specifically for players who struggle with:

Heavy contact

Hooks

Pushes

(⚠️ If these aren’t your common misses, then what’s in this video could actually make things worse!)

This lesson is inspired by Alex Noren’s recent win at The Belfry. Known as one of the hardest workers on tour, Noren has been drilling this feel for over a decade.

The drill focuses on the shoulder and pelvic tilts in the downswing, which helps to:

Move the low point forward

Shift the club path left

Increase shaft lean

If you often feel “stuck,” catch the ground heavy, or see a higher-than-expected ball flight, this could provide some really useful direction.

And one more big takeaway: watching how Noren trains with deliberate exaggeration is a powerful reminder of what it actually takes to make fast, lasting changes.

In this breakdown, I take a look at a very common swing issue — over-rotating in transition, hanging back on the trail foot, and sending the club path too far from out-to-in.

It often leads to pulls, slices, heavy strikes, (and a lot of frustration!)

In the video, I’ll walk through:

✅ A clear example of what this swing pattern looks like so you can identify it in your own swing

✅ Tour Pro Examples- Taking a look at what some of the best ball strikers all have in common.

✅ A simple practice station to set up in your next practice that will guide you to the new pattern

✅ What to look for when analyzing your swing from DTL after you’ve worked on the drill.

If your upper body tends to outrace your lower half… or you feel stuck on your back foot in the downswing… this might give you a better direction to work in.

If you’ve ever struggled with making a strong backswing, one that actually sets you up to deliver the club with power and consistency, there’s a good chance your pivot motion may have something to do with it.

The video below is some footage of me battling through my swing tendencies on the range, and talking through what they are.

One of the biggest things I wish I’d understood earlier is just how much the pivot, your turn, tilt, extension, and sway, influences everything else: swing plane, club path, arm structure, wrist angles, and more, all leading to distance and accuracy.

(That’s the main reason I share, to hopefully help another player facing similar challenges.)

In this session, I’m using the Tour Striker SmartBall to work on and feel an improved pivot motion.
For me, that means:

Feeling my knees change flex

Learning how to rotate my torso while staying centered

Which then leads to better arm structure and wrist angles as a result.

Early on, I would work from the outside in, trying to place and force the club into certain positions. But to create a swing that feels repeatable and efficient, it has to start from the inside out.

Hope this helps you get closer to the root causes in your own swing. 👊

Leave a comment or get in contact if this hits home for you, or if you’ve got any questions about your own swing.

What do the best ball strikers in the world have in common?

They may all have slightly different styles, but the core movements in their swings often fall within very similar averages. These patterns in pivot, sequence, and structure show up again and again.

The closer you can move toward these movement averages, the better your contact, control, and consistency tend to become.

Watch the short video looking at two key benchmarks and ask yourself:

How close am I to these patterns?

What do I feel in my own swing?

What does my ball flight tell me?

If you’re not sure what to work on, or how to structure your practice, the Online Academy is designed to help. Once you’ve captured your swing, we take a deep dive into your movement pattern to identify exactly what needs attention, then build a focused, personalized practice plan to help you understand your swing and make real progress.
