Pivot Drills for Sway

Sway in the backswing often occurs when rotational ability is limited or the concept of how to rotate has not yet been learned. The body compensates for a lack of rotation by adding lateral motion, which is often coupled with extension of the pelvis and spine and thrust towards the ball. Excessive lateral motion impairs the torso’s ability to rotate, which in turn affects the arm structure, wrist mechanics, and overall sequencing of the swing.

Prolonged sway can also lead to back pain, as a late compensation in the downswing tries to make up for the missing rotation.

These are some ways you can begin to develop the feeling of rotation and proper loading of the trail hip.
